The Shoulder Pads Are Back On!

Tuesday, October 13th, 2009

Nearly after a two-decade hiatus, it appears that the stars are leading us back to rock the pads.  While some may be averse to the trend (been there done that), this look offer some valuable benefits.  First off, it creates the illusion of a  slender or more waist, and lets not forget the physical protection…  Lets see who rocked the look!

Fall Fashion Trends 2009 – The Woman’s Cape

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

The woman’s cape (aka Lady’s Cape) is a cultural remnant from the 1800s. Worn by southern women in the Civil War era, the cape hasn’t help cultural significance for over a century – yet the Fall 2009 runways were adorned with the look. We love the classic simplicity of the cape, and hope the look makes its way North for the winter.

Fall Fashion Trends 2009 – Leggings

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Leggings are all about sex appeal. During the 1980s, the aerobics and fitness craze made the athletic legging a socially acceptable piece of street attire. By the late 1990s, not so much.

Today, the legging has evolved into a more sophisticated-yet-sexy piece of streetwear. The bold colors of the aerobic legging may be dead, but the use of spandex and stretch materials lives on.

Fall Fashion Trends 2009 – The Minidress

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

The minidress is one of those fashion pieces that is best left to a few, to be adored by many. The prevalence of the minidress on the Fall 2009 runways in unlikely to create a huge demand amongst the masses, but is likely to turn some heads on a busy Soho street.

Fall Fashion Trends 2009 – The Toggle Coat

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Put your toggle goggles on – and expect to see a glut of these bullet-shape fasteners on outerwear throughout the country. We adore the toggle coat because the styling of the toggles adds a sophisticated look to the most inexpensive (read: H&M) fashion items.

2009 Fall Fashion Trends – 1940s Skirt Suit

A 1940s style skirt suit seen at the Lanvin Fall 2009 show

The skirt suit – a relic of generations past, or a must-have professional look for Fall 2009? For Alber Elbaz, the skirt suit isn’t some remnant of a bygone era, but a keystone in his Fall 2009 collection created for Lanvin. In a variety of dark shades, the 40s era skirt-suit is both glamorous and professional, and should see some play in the coming season.

We’ve already discussed the Day Glo look in more detail (see our post on Versace’s neon fashion), but bright colors will dominate the season. Other designer’s that have embraced Day Glo dyes include Ports 1961, Marc Jacobs, and Michael Kors.

One Shoulder Dresses

The one shoulder dress is a popular warm-weather mainstay, yet the look dominated Fall Fashion Week in a variety of cuts and fabrics. Designers that have produced one shoulder offerings include Calvin Klein, Lela Rose, and Carolina Herrera.

Sheer Tops

Preen See-Through Top

In the same off-season spirit of one shoulder dresses, sheer tops have transitioned from Spring/Summer collections into Fall/Winter collections. We’re still not sure if this look will be adapted by the masses, but an Indian summer may change our tune. Designers that have embraced the trend include Chado Ralph Rucci, Preen, and Rue du Mail.

Monotone

The monotone look is difficult to pull off, and usually only works on those with ultra-thin frames. Designers that have incorporated monotone pieces into their collections include Prada, Synthia Steffe, and Narciso Rodriguez.

Thigh High Boots

Over-the-knee boots (more commonly referred to as “thigh highs”) were all the rage at Fall Fashion Week. Designers that incorporated tall boots into their collections include Vivienne Westwood, Hussein Chalayan, and Isabel Marant.

Layers

This is tough to call a trend, as layers are the lifeblood of fashion – but designers that layered up this season include Rag&Bone, DKNY, and Karen Walker.

Black and white prints and patterns continue to build steam on the runways. These contrasting tones were utilized by Matthew Williamson, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Philip Lim.
