Forever 21 Expands to the UK

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Congratulations Forever 21! In July the successful young woman, men and children’s clothing store will open its first UK store doors to its 50,000 sq ft building in Birmingham.

The size of the outlet makes it the 3rd largest store in the Bullring Shopping Center after Selfridges and Debenhams, which was one of the reasons why Forever21 chose Bullring over London’s Covent Garden. The city’s size and young age demographics were a determining factor as well.

The LA based clothing store has more than 480 stores in the US and Puerto Rico, with internal operations in Canada, Korea and Japan. Their move to the UK follows the successful expansions made by Apple and Hollister.

2nd Annual Caribbean American Fashion Show in Fort Lauderdale

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Everyone who’s anyone is on board with the countdown to the hottest fashion event to take place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The 2nd Annual Caribbean American Fashion Show is scheduled to take place next Sunday June 20th at 8pm in the Renaissance Plantation Hotel…that’s only TEN days away! Over 50 breath taking models will light up the runway in dresses, pants, jackets, boots, bags and accessories designed by ten talented designers from America and various Caribbean islands. There’s even some talk about models wearing body art. Interesting!

Of course there has to be great music to compliment a great show. Maurice Tucker, the president and CEO of SynJen Magazine, Vibezz TV and Hype Radio, has arranged for Jon Sax, who performed at the 5th Annual Jazz in the Garden 2010 and the Jamaican Jazz and Blues Festival 2010, to provide the musical entertainment for the night.

“This year’s event will bring a new meaning to sexy. One can expect to be mesmerized, awe struck and completely entertained.” said Mr. Tucker, who has also arranged other fashion shows such as Fashion Extravaganza, South Beach Fashion on the Beach and Haute Couture Fashion Show. I don’t know about you but I’m getting butterflies in my stomach just thinking about how fun this event is going to be. I can’t wait!

Finding the Perfect Nail Polish for Your Skin Tone

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

It’s summer time again and we’re all going to be spending ample time outdoors enjoying the fresh air. With the hot weather rapidly approaching, women everywhere are preparing their feet for a summer of sandals, flip flops, open toe shoes or even shoelessness (only appropriate at the beach of course). Well, I’m here to tell you having the right color nail polish for those pretty toes is a must! Here are some pointers that will help you find the perfect shade of polish for that summer pedicure.

Fair skin tone: Since you have such a light complexion you can almost get away with murder. Purples, pinks and reds go fantastically with your tone. Remember, you can ALMOST get away with any color- there are a few shades that you should stay away from. Dark polishes such as blues and greens are no good. Yellows and shades of gold make you look pale and in need of a tan (shaking my head) not what we’re going for.

Medium skin tone: Pinks, blues and oranges are your color girl! These shades will help give tan looking skin while maintaining that bright and dynamic look. If you are able to find these colors in metallic EVEN BETTER! Unless you’re trying to avoid the tan look avoid using navy blues, dark reds or purples.

Tan skin tone: Like women who are fair skinned you can get away with most colors. Light blue, pink and browns look great against your skin. Even chocolate would compliment your tone. The Steer clear of is gold as it often blends in with skin.

Dark skin tone: Unlike the ladies with fair and medium skin tones you don’t have to stay away from maroons or dark greens. Go for it! These colors make you look HOT! Gold is still taboo and with shades that are too light might be a bad choice. Depending on how dark your skin is avoid whites, oranges and silver.

So now that you have identified that special polish that’s going to turn you into a rock diva for the summer, strap up your newest sandals and head for the beach!

L’Oreal to Buy Essie Cosmetics

Monday, May 17th, 2010

L’Oreal, the world’s leading beauty company has announced it’s plans to buy Essie Cosmetics LTD. Founded in 1981 by Essie Weingarten, a former buyer for Henri Bendel’s, the Queens, NY nail polish giant boasted $28 million in sales in 2009.

The cosmetics firm began its journey to the top offering 12 shades of polish and now offers a collection of over 200 stylish selections and has received a myriad of magazine awards. In addition to polish, Essie has expanded its business to include other products: nail treatments, accessories, cleansers and, even lip gloss.

The acquisition of Essie by L’Oreal is estimated to be completed in 60-90 days. Ms. Weingarten and current CEO Max Sortino will remain active in the company as part of a multi-year agreement. Frederic Roze, President and CEO of L’Oreal USA said, “This strategic acquisition will enable L’Oreal to increase our share in the nail color and care market which has seen significant growth year over year.”

Undoubtedly, much of the growth in said market has been thanks to the innovation of Ms. Weingarten whose nail polishes have become staples at spas and nail salons worldwide.

Fall 2009 Fashion Accessories: Zipper Jewelry

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

Here’s a little bit of fashion history for you. The zipper has been a fashion accessory since 1923 – it was a shoe. Invented by the B.F. Goodrich Company, the “Zipper” was a unique model of footwear that sported metal teeth united by a single fastener. The fastener, of course, became synonymous with the zipper we all know today.

Flash forward to 2009, and the zipper is appearing in places that Benjamin Franklin Goodrich could have never imagined. Our two favorite examples below…
