On Tuesday night, April 13th, at the Pierre Hotel, former president Bill Clinton received a $1 million check from designer and CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg. Designer Tory Burch and CEO of Theory/Helmut Lang, Andrew Rosen helped von Furstenberg hand over the check. The money which was raised from CFDA’s “Fashion for Haiti” t-shirt (debuted on February 16), was made out to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund in hopes of rebuilding Haiti and helping the earthquake victims get back on their feet.
We are proud of these designers for having kind hearts and caring about global issues.

Lady GaGa and Beyonce, two of the most popular stars in pop music, first got together for Beyonce’s “Video Phone” which was released in September 2009. Now they are at it again for Lady GaGa’s catchy and addictive song “Telephone,” the second single from The Fame Monster. They both may have different styles in music and fashion, but they just mesh so well together.
If you are a Quentin Tarantino fan, you will notice that the opening scene of “Video Phone” is referencing Reservoir Dogs as Beyonce is walking with a group of criminals in black suits, and “Telephone” is featuring the yellow “Pussy Wagon” truck from Kill Bill. Another thing that stood out was that Lady GaGa looked completely toned down in “Video Phone” whereas she was being her usual wild self in “Telephone.” However, a lot of us were surprised with the lesbian interaction, naked scene in prison with black tape over her nipples, her sunglasses with cigarettes, and yellow security tape. Regardless of what she wears and how odd it may look, she is not afraid to show the world who she is — her distinguished fashion style says it all.
Diane von Furstenberg, designer and President of Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), is known for casting models of different ethnicities on her runways at Fashion Week. However, she had a wider range of diversity at NY Fashion Week Fall 2010. 16 of her 43 looks were worn by models of color and she will make sure to promote more diverse models in the future. According to NYMag.com’s The Cut, Furstenberg said at a launch party of her new CD Proud to Be Woman, “I insist. It’s my rule, and I always tell my casting agents. That’s it! Otherwise, I don’t hire them. I send everybody an e-mail right before Fashion Week to remind them to do it.” It sounds like she means serious business.
Bravo to Furstenberg for speaking up about a change that many people have been wanting to see in the fashion industry for years. If we want to attract a wider audience at fashion shows every year, then we need to be more diverse on the runways. Hopefully, more designers will welcome this need for diversity, and embrace her example.
Betsy Johnson rocked NY Fashion Week 2010 with a brightly colored, western extravaganza! Her collection featured gun belt clad cowgirls adorned with bandannas, hats and nearly neon suede boots.
Kelly Osborne stole the show appearing first as a cowgirl, and, later, in a white Charlie Chaplin style dress complete with a black bowler hat, tie, mustache, cane and her black Pomeranian.
Also spotted in the crowd were New York stylist Patricia Fields, and, former Sabrina the Teenage Witch star Melissa Joan Heart.
The show ended with a model, donning bright red wax lips, walking the runway followed by a man holding a sign that read, “Long Live McQueen”. Betsy Johnson took her bow in a “chain gang” inspired pair of long johns with a sparkling sequined heart placed squarely on her rear end.
Yet again, Betsy Johnson proved to her NY Fashion Week audience why she is the reigning queen of the runway.

People’s Revolution owner, The City cast member, and, one tough cookie, Kelly Cutrone, made her Bravo TV debut last night in her new show Kell on Earth. With a name born from an insult hurled by a nasty, former lover, Kell on Earth gives us a glimpse into the everyday life of the shrewd, successful, and, at times, kinda scary fashionista.
Cutrone calls her reality tv show, Kell on Earth a “girl power show” that highlights brazen business women as they conquer the world while also allowing viewers to follow her life away from the “Priestess Temple” that is People’s Revolution. Behind her hard veneer is a woman who, shockingly, lives in a pink and white house and appears to be a jovial person with a heart of gold.
The other side of Kelly Cutrone is an unexpected and interesting one. We meet a woman who loves to cook “psychic recipes”, which consist of going to the market and asking the food what it wants to become, and someone who includes driving to her home town, Syracuse, with an all black clad entourage, for a trip to her favorite ice rink, on her list of favorite things. At home, Cutrone is in her most important role as mother to adorable, seven year old daughter Ava, and, as she fondly puts it, interracial wife to Ava’s nanny.
With so many insipid reality tv stars stinking up the atmosphere, the introduction of a trend setter and a fashion powerhouse to the fray is a breath of fresh air.
Jean Paul Gaultier wowed guests of his runway show at Fashion Week in Paris. Reportedly, the show was visually astounding. The models almost looked like tropical birds as they made their way down the runway. The brightly colored garments and their intricately designed accessories were reminiscent of an Amazonian rainforest. Some wore cowboy boots, others wore beaded sombreros or had palm leaves woven into their hair.
According to Gaultier, his inspiration was a recent piece of popular culture. James Cameron’s latest film, Avitar, not only grossed $2 billion dollars, but it also was the spark that fueled what was, arguably, the most imaginative production of the entire season. Hopefully, his show was an exciting preview of what NY Fashion Week has to offer.
If denim on denim doesn't look good on a model, how will it look on you...
Every season, a respected designer unveils a denim-on-denim look – an inevitable (and unfortunate) fact in fashion. This year, Chloe has the honor.
We’ve seen denim on denim touted as a trend for Spring 2010 (and every other year for that matter) – but as always, we’re just not buying into this look. Best to leave the “Canadian Tuxedo” to those folks up north – and by “up north”, we mean in Siberian where it’s too cold to notice what someone is wearing.
