David Dixon’s Walk to Freedom at Toronto Fashion Week 2009

David Dixon

Toronto based designer David Dixon presented his Spring 2009 Collection, Walk to Freedom, at Toronto Fashion Week 2009. The stylish ready-to-wear collection was mostly comprised of knee-length dresses, gowns, tops and skirts, with occasional appearances of trousers and jackets.

Rich textile and floral prints on spun raw silk lent an elegant touch, while chunky stone jewelry and glitter detailing were equally captivating. An infusion of crimson was a treat to the eye amidst the longstanding tones of black, ivory and metallic grey. However, a floor length leather-quilted outfit was the highlight of the evening.

John Galliano Fall|Winter 2009 Show – Fashion at Its Extreme

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

The John Galliano show at the Paris Women’s Fashion Week was a fantasy trip to Siberia. Pulsating blue lights created the perfect ambiance for a theatrical show for extreme fashion. The runway took the form of warehouse tunnel through which models walked in Balkan inspired clothing – with red, blue, white and icy-grey colors dominating the evening.

From the delicate cross stitches on a peasant blouse to the sparking gold glitters on the model’s eyelashes, Galliano nailed the smallest details. There is no denying that a great amount of research was performed on the traditional Siberian folk costumes and culture, recreating the correct patterns on the clothing.

2009 London Fashion Week – Fashion is Going Green

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

2009 London Fashion Week saw the launch of the Sustainable Clothing Action Plan, an initiative taken by Britain’s DEFRA (Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs).

From textile manufacturers to retailers to fashion designers, the plan involves more than 300 organizations, dealing with the negatives of “throw away” fashion that is increasing carbon emissions, water usage and waste. The aim is to increase recycling of textiles and to create consumer awareness of eco-fashion.

According to Lord Philip Hunt, DEFRA overseer and Minister of Sustainable Development & Energy, the plan is the beginning of a great movement in the fashion industry.

Following the annoucement, Noir launched its collection of organic clothing, Esthetica and the premium label Bllack Noir, a reasonably priced rock-n-roll inspired collection.

The organic range includes black pants with embellished belts, jackets, tight skirts and t-shirts. Atypically, Noir has used some cool colors this season, mostly navy blue and icy-grey, seen in casual shirts, woolens and silk tops worn with peep-toe heels and leather accessories.

Take a look.
