2010 Fashion Week: Jean Paul Gaultier’s Avitar Inspired Runway Show

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Jean Paul Gaultier wowed guests of his runway show at Fashion Week in Paris. Reportedly, the show was visually astounding. The models almost looked like tropical birds as they made their way down the runway. The brightly colored garments and their intricately designed accessories were reminiscent of an Amazonian rainforest. Some wore cowboy boots, others wore beaded sombreros or had palm leaves woven into their hair.

According to Gaultier, his inspiration was a recent piece of popular culture. James Cameron’s latest film, Avitar, not only grossed $2 billion dollars, but it also was the spark that fueled what was, arguably, the most imaginative production of the entire season. Hopefully, his show was an exciting preview of what NY Fashion Week has to offer.

Elie Saab, the king of red carpet fashion, introduced his Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2009 collection at Paris Fashion Week. This season, the Middle Eastern designer offers a sober and stylish assortment of eveningwear, featuring everything from one-shouldered and strapless numbers to poufy sleeves and ruffles.

Intricate embroideries and crystal works looked fabulous on dusty blue, lilac, ivory and beige. Deviating from his hallmark empire bust line, the designer took a different approach, creating lean silhouettes in silk taffeta, chiffon, satin with brocade and organza detailing.

DIOR Spring 2009 Haute Couture at Paris Fashion Week

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

John Galliano’s

John Galliano’s Spring 2009 Haute Couture Collection for Dior was a
Paris Fashion Week extravaganza, exuding opulence and femininity. Featuring corseted silhouettes with a tight waist and voluminous crinolines, the show was reminiscent of the romantic 1950s.

Inspiration from the 17th century Dutch Masters was also evident in Galliano’s choice of a rich Vermeer color palette, tulip prints, Delftware embroideries in blue and white, and pleats and poufs galore.

Plumed hats on tousled hair and Grecian inspired shoes were the perfect accessories for the evening. Yet the showstopper was a gown in a plush, burnished red, bearing the unparalleled grace and richness of a princess’ attire.

Elegant and magnificent as ever, the Elie Saab RTW Fall 2009 collection was simply awesome, featuring a wide variety of evening wears. From icy cool formal attires to hot prom gowns, the show was among the most exciting at Paris Fashion Week.

Black gowns accented with fur strolls were a hit on the runway, along with beautiful one-shoulder prom dresses. Short outfits were paired up with matching stockings, infusing some sexiness into the collection.

Our favorite pieces: the slinky Grecian-inspired red carpet dresses that came in Persian and steel blue, dark olive, grey and black. Here are some photos from the runway:

Louis Vuitton RTW Fall 2009 Collection: French Regalia

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

Marc Jacobs’ creations for the Louis Vuitton Fall Fashion collection debuted at Paris Fashion Week was a brave expression of his positive mindset. The maverick designer was in his usual mood, “I have a practical mind. Cut the party and celebrities, but you can’t sacrifice the beauty of the clothes.”

And so it was. From the start to the end the show was a delightful celebration with chic, sensuous and sassy designs. Curvy black dresses were made youthful with colorful silk bows and pink, plum, blue, teal and red peplums.

A variety of skirts were on display. Jacobs’ new Twinset comprised a printed jacket and mini skirt teamed with matching leggings. Fine see-through tops were paired with short bubble skirts and high leather boots. Gray jackets looked elegant with tight ruched skirts flaunting ruffles at the hem.

Bags came in black, pink, red and icy-gray with sequins, crystal detailing, and fishnet ruffles. Check out some photos from the show:

Chanel RTW Fall 2009 – The Black and White Saga

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Karl Lagerfield’s RTW Fall 2009 show at the Paris Fashion Week set the mood with mostly blacks and whites. The designer from the House of Chanel lived up to high expectations, featuring classic-yet-sophisticated black suits as the core of the collection.

There were plenty of white and pink ruffles, with frills and pleats to embellish closely-fitted black outfits. Long chiffon skirts teamed with fitted black coats were the perfect blend of modernity and tradition.

The first touch of color showed up with a muted green trouser worn with a black sweater and a large pearl pendant as an accessory. Check out some highlights from the show:

John Galliano Fall|Winter 2009 Show – Fashion at Its Extreme

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

The John Galliano show at the Paris Women’s Fashion Week was a fantasy trip to Siberia. Pulsating blue lights created the perfect ambiance for a theatrical show for extreme fashion. The runway took the form of warehouse tunnel through which models walked in Balkan inspired clothing – with red, blue, white and icy-grey colors dominating the evening.

From the delicate cross stitches on a peasant blouse to the sparking gold glitters on the model’s eyelashes, Galliano nailed the smallest details. There is no denying that a great amount of research was performed on the traditional Siberian folk costumes and culture, recreating the correct patterns on the clothing.
